Sassenach Asymmetrical Scarf Pattern

Do you like the show, Outlander? I love it. All the neat knitted (and some crocheted!) items they wear are so pretty–I had to make something that sort of felt to me, like the Sassenach herself. The Sassenach Asymmetrical Scarf pattern was created with that in mind.

Sassenach Asymmetrical Scarf

As I mentioned, I really like the show, “Outlander” and really wanted to create something that also reminded me about the show. You know how some knitted garments have that dropped stitch and there’s these strands of yarn just floating between rows? I wanted that look but with crochet, it’s a bit harder to do, so I settled for a double-triple crochet stitch instead.

With an asymmetrical design, this scarf’s simple stitch patterns create something very pleasing to look at.

You can make this as long or short as you like!

Materials Needed

#3 DK/Light weight yarn, about 320 yards. I used Style Craft Cabaret in Ocean—1.75 skeins (or more, depending on how long you want it)
4mm hook
Tapestry Needle
Scissors
Stitch Markers

Pattern Notes

Written in US terms
Ch1 does not count as a stitch
Ch5 does count as a Double triple crochet
Starts out with just 2 stitches then gradually grows to many stitches.

Gauge

Stitch pattern 6 row repeat = about 3 inches; 14 stitches across = 3 inches. This only matters if you’re trying to get close to the 60” length. You can make this longer or shorter as you like.

Sizing

About 55” long at row 119. Width is going to gradually get larger from half an inch up to 20” at row 119. The scarf can be made longer and as such, will also become wider, which can then be worn as a shawlette or hooded scarf.
